Odoo 20 accounting changes: why Swiss SMEs should look now
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. For Swiss SMEs, the Odoo 20 accounting changes are not cosmetic: the way you structure your chart of accounts, record bank entries and read payment statuses evolves. At the same time, Odoo has raised the price of its Custom plan and introduced a new Light User licence.
This article sums up what changes in accounting, what it now costs and what to check before you upgrade. It is written from the point of view of an official Odoo partner and fiduciary in Geneva, for business owners and finance managers rather than developers.
What are the Odoo 20 accounting changes?
The official release notes list dozens of accounting updates. Five of them have a direct impact on the daily work of a Swiss SME:
- Parent accounts replace account groups. Your chart of accounts is now structured through parent accounts, and account codes become optional. Reports that rely on account groups need to be reviewed.
- Bank consistency. All journal entries impacting bank accounts must now originate from bank transactions. Manual entries posted directly on a bank account, a common shortcut, are no longer possible.
- New payment statuses. "In Process" becomes "Paid" and "Paid" becomes "Reconciled". Filters, dashboards and exports built on the old labels will give misleading results if nobody updates them.
- Duplicate detection. Invoices and bills now carry two levels of warning: red for very likely duplicates, yellow for potential duplicates to investigate before posting.
- Depreciation models. Asset models are replaced by depreciation models, and asset settings move to the asset accounts themselves.
Payments, pain.001 and AI: the other Odoo 20 updates to know
Several changes concern payment flows. The PAIN version setting for outgoing payments moves from the journal to the payment method. After the ISO 20022 switch of 14 November 2026, this deserves a check: your Swiss payments must leave in the right format, as explained in our article on the ISO 20022 structured address deadline in Switzerland.
Odoo 20 also lets you pay bills directly from Odoo through a payment initiation (PISP) interface, with a single signature. Whether your Swiss bank is supported must be confirmed before you count on it. On the supplier side, bill line prediction pre-fills the product, account, tax and analytic distribution from your history, which strengthens a digitalised supplier invoice workflow in Odoo.
Finally, AI moves to the centre. AI agents can create and update records, and the assistant can answer questions on your finances based on your accounting data. The release notes set one important condition: all AI features now need credits bought via In-App Purchase (IAP). AI therefore becomes a variable cost to budget, not a free option.
Is there a Swiss-specific change in Odoo 20?
Not in the release notes. When we checked them on 26 October 2026, they contained no section dedicated to the Swiss localisation, whereas other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, have their own entries. For Switzerland, the relevant changes are therefore the general ones listed above.
That is good news for stability. It also means that your Swiss settings (VAT, QR-bill, payroll) must be tested on a copy of your database rather than assumed to be unchanged.
Odoo 20 pricing: what does the new Custom plan cost?
The second part of the news is financial. On 26 October 2026, odoo.com displayed the following prices to us, in euros, per user per month with yearly billing:
- Standard: EUR 24.90 (EUR 19.90 during the first year). Unchanged.
- Custom: EUR 44.90 (EUR 35.90 during the first year). It was EUR 37.40 in January 2026, an increase of about 20%.
- Light User: EUR 7.90, a new licence.
The Custom plan is the one you need for Odoo Studio and agentic AI, multi-company, the external API, Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting. Many Swiss SMEs with a holding structure or a connected tool use it without realising it.
In practice, for a company with 10 full users on the Custom plan, the yearly licence goes from EUR 4,488 to EUR 5,388 at list price, or EUR 900 more per year. The first-year discount only applies for 12 months, and only to the users in the initial order.
Prices observed on odoo.com on 26 October 2026. Odoo sets prices per country and may change them at any time: the figures on your own quotation or renewal prevail.
Odoo Light User: a saving or a hidden cost?
The Light User covers employees who only need limited access: their own time off, expenses, attendance, appraisals and planning, the barcode app, field service and read-only Knowledge. As employees, they can also receive payslips, use the Point of Sale and the manufacturing shop floor.
The catch lies in the definition. Under the Odoo 20 Enterprise Subscription Agreement, a Light User is not only an account designated as such, but also any active employee record not linked to an active user account. For a Swiss SME that runs its payroll in Odoo, every employee who receives a payslip without logging in may therefore count. With 15 such employees, that represents EUR 1,422 per year at list price.
Conversely, employees who hold a full licence today only to record their expenses or leave could move to a Light User. According to the Odoo pricing page, this licence is obtained through an Odoo advisor, with a quotation based on your needs.
Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now?
Not necessarily straight away, but you should plan it. Odoo provides three years of standard support per major version. Odoo 17 reached the end of standard support in September 2026, and Odoo 18 is planned to follow in September 2027.
The contract adds a financial argument. Once per year, and no earlier than six months after a new major version, a database on a version older than the three covered versions is charged an extra fee of 25% of its annualised price. With Odoo 20 released, the covered versions are 18, 19 and 20. Databases still on Odoo 17 or older are therefore exposed from around March 2027.
On renewal, existing customers paying less than the current list price see their charges increase by up to 7% per year of the previous term, not necessarily straight to the new price. Users added during the term, however, are billed at the list price of the day.
Your Odoo 20 upgrade checklist
- Check your plan: do you really use Studio, multi-company or the API that justify the Custom plan?
- Count your active users and your employee records without a user: this is your future licence base.
- Map the reports, filters and exports built on account groups or on the old payment statuses.
- List the manual entries posted on bank accounts and replace them with a process based on bank transactions.
- Test your Swiss VAT, QR-bill, pain.001 and payroll flows on a duplicate of your database.
- Set an AI credit budget before activating agents.
- Read your renewal quotation and note your renewal date.
